Who You Hang Out With On Your Site or Blog Has A Big Impact On Your Long Term Success

Who you "hang out" with online is very important.

Your audience makes inherent judgments about your credibility, integrity and sincerity based on who your site is associated with.  This has to do with all the elements on your site:

  • Advertising
  • Comments
  • Topics
  • Who you mention or promote
  • Links to other blogs

It's easy to control the NON-MONETARY parts of your blog or site. Where it gets sticky and tempting is when you are faced with saying "NO" to some good income because you know you don't want to be (or know you shouldn't be) associated with the advertiser or idea.

Sometimes its obvious you need to say NO

One time, I had a big casino contact me and wanted me to do a bunch of graphic design and web work. Someone was going to do it anyway. Most of my readers would probably never know I did it. Me doing it, or not doing, wasn't going to deter the Casino. I needed the money.

Hey, folks...
like my blog?
Tips help me
pay the bills.

But the answer was "NO", and I knew it immediately. It wasn't even a debate. What I represent online and in my writing was not compatible with trading my integrity for income by bringing on a client like that. I didn't want to "hang out" with them for many reasons, but what it said about my sincerity was obvious (given what I write about every day).

Sometimes it is NOT so obvious you should say NO

Sometimes we just get this little itch, or uncomfortableness about an advertiser or idea. We can't put our finger on it, but if we have a conscience, we just know something is not quite right. Trust those intuitions. Ask some other folks you trust for their opinion. They'll help you decide if you should say no.

If you want to build a good online business, or professional blog, you have to think long term. Who you hang out with says alot about who you are.  Don't betray your customers or readers for money or any other reason. If you do, they'll abandon you for sure.

Number One Factor

A reader asks: in your opinion what is the number one factor in achieving financial freedom?

First, let me state for new readers that I define financial freedom not as wealth (lack or abundance), but as having the right attitude about money, using money the right way, and being free from financial stress.

The number one foundational factor to financial freedom is seeing money as God does. No matter what other positive financial factors are in place, if you don’t have a Godly attitude about it, you’ll never have true freedom.

On a practical level, the number one factor is getting out of debt and staying out of debt. No matter what it takes.

Financial stress over debt is a marriage killer, a spirit slayer and a joy destroyer. Nothing you obtain by being in consumer debt is worth the stress, emotional investment and life energy needed to deal with it.

Get out of debt. Stay out of debt. Commit yourself to avoiding debt. Teach others to rid themselves of debt.

I’ve been on both sides of the fence, and there is nothing quite so relaxing and refreshing than not being stressed out over your four credit cards, your two cars loans, a pair of school loans, the home equity loan… and that doesn’t even count your other bills. It’s amazing how much energy and “life” you free up when you are loosed from the bonds of debt.

Check out my book, Life Without Debt.

What are your questions about getting out of debt and financial freedom?
